OUTDOOR PURSUITS: STUDENT JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Note: Because of the inherently dangerous nature of outdoor adventure, Outdoor Pursuits requires its staff to go above and beyond the standard Campus Recreation safety certifications and training. "Trip Leaders In Training" often spend 6 months to a year learning the wilderness skills and collecting the required safety certifications before they ever lead a trip. We are always willing to help teach the skills necessary to be a successful trip leader, but please be advised that if you are looking for a job to earn some "quick cash", this is not it!

OP TRIP LEADER
  • Must have sucessfully completed the "Trip Leader In Training" process before being eligible for this position (see below).
  • Must demonstrate the wilderness skills and knowledge necessary to safely lead an adventure trip.
  • Must adhere to Leave No Trace (LNT) principles.
  • Required skill set may include paddling, hiking/backpacking, caving, climbing, cycling, etc.
  • Must be willing to learn and engage in the process of group formation, teambuilding, etc.
  • Must posess all mandatory safety certifications.
  • Must posess a safe driving record and valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to provide quality customer service.
  • Must be willing to comply with all rental office protocol.
  • Willing to comply with all gear rental and maintenance protocol.

Certification Requirements
1) CPR for the Professional Rescuer (ARC)
2) First Aid (ARC)
3) Lifeguard (ARC)
4) Leave No Trace Instructor
5) Wilderness First Aid or First Responder (WFA or WFR)
6) FSU Challenge Facilitator *not required, but encouraged

TRIP LEADER IN TRAINING - note: this is an unpaid volunteer position!
  • Trip Leaders in Training will be required to complete all of the training and certifications required of Trip Leaders. This includes learning about OP gear, outdoor recreation activities, safety regulations and protocol, van driver safety, and OP Rental Office protocol. OP only selects a limited number of Trip Leaders In Training each semester. Interested applicants should fill out the Trip Leader in Training Interest Form and will be contacted in January to schedule an interview. If selected, Trip Leaders In Training must complete the training requirements within the specified training window (1 semester maximum) in order to be promoted to Trip Leader. As compensation for their volunteer efforts, Trip Leaders in Training will be able to enjoy the various job incentives listed below.

  • FREE equipment rental for your personal use.
  • FREE participation on designated OP Trips; reduced trip fees for other designated trips.
  • Special skill trainings (i.e. kayak rolling, climbing clinics, etc.)
  • Various "Pro deals" throughout the year.

Disclaimer: In order to receive the aforementioned privileges from Outdoor Pursuits, you must be currently operating as a Trip Leader or Trip Leader In Training. If you discontinue volunteering or working as a paid staff member, all privileges will be suspended. If you abuse the privileges, they will be terminated. This program is on a semester-by-semester basis. These privileges are for your use only.

Application and Selection Information
New Trip Leaders In Training are selected each August. To be considered for the next selection phase, please fill out the Trip Leaders In Training Interest Form and return it to outdoorpursuits@admin.fsu.edu by January 6th, 2012. Interviews will be scheduled during the second week of classes.
