FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a sport club?
A sport club is a recognized student organization formed by individuals with a common interest in a sport activity that exists to promote, develop interest, and/or compete in that particular activity.  Clubs may be instructional, recreational, competitive, or any combination thereof.  Characterized by being student-initiated and student-managed, the basic structure of clubs allow members numerous opportunities for leadership and decision-making. 

Who is eligible to join a sport club at FSU?
All FSU students, faculty and full-time staff are eligilbe to participate.  Some clubs are limited to students due to their National Governing Body's rules and regulations.  Non-FSU affiliated individuals are not eligible to join sport clubs at FSU.

How do I become a part of a club?
Get in touch with the club contact person on the club's page List of Active Clubs via phone or email and he or she will assist you in becoming a member.  Feel free to stop by one of their scheduled practices as well.

What are the benefits of joining a sport club?
Joining a sport club offers many rewards including getting the chance to compete or participate in a sport activity, getting involved and making friends that have similar interests, gaining opportunities for leadership, and increasing your level of physical fitness.

What is the difference between sport clubs and intramurals?
Sport clubs are led and organized by students.  Team practices, meetings, competitions and fundraisers are led by club officers and club members.  Sport clubs practice multiple times per week and many travel to compete against other schools' sport club teams.  Intramurals consist of FSU students, faculty and staff that compete against each other in organized leagues and tournaments within the FSU community on a more recreational level.

What is the difference between a sport club and a varsity athletic program?
Sport clubs are organized and managed by students.  They range from competitive to recreational to instructional and are funded by the Student Government Association, club fundraisers and membership dues.  Clubs compete against other university club teams across the Southeast.  On rare occasions, FSU club teams will compete against varsity athletic teams.  Varsity athletic sports are housed in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and compete in NCAA competition.

Do I need experience in order to participate?
Not necessarily.  Many of the clubs are accepting of any skill level and are willing to teach you how to do their activity.

Do sport clubs conduct tryouts?
Some of the clubs do conduct tryouts, though most do not.  Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Volleyball, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, and Bowling do hold tryouts.  Contact the specific club you are interested in to learn if they are having tryouts.

Do sport clubs charge membership dues?
Most sport clubs do charge varying amounts of membership dues, depending on the club.  Dues vary year to year for some clubs.  Contact the specific club you are interested in to find out about their dues.

How are sport clubs funded?
Sport clubs are funded through student fees.  Student Government Association allocates these fee monies to Sport Club Council, which is the funding board for all of the sport clubs.  Clubs also fund their activities through fundraisers, alumni donations and membership dues.

How do I start a new sport club?

Where is the sport club office located?
The Sport Club Office is located in Suite 136 of Tully Gym.  Tully Gym is located between the Leach Center and Speicher Tennis Complex.
