Revised for Fall 2004
Florida State University does not provide accident insurance coverage
for injuries received by Intramural participants. Each participant should
make sure that he/she has coverage either through family policies or the
student insurance plan. We cannot emphasize this point enough.Florida State University PROHIBITS possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages on University property. This includes the Intramural Sports Complex and Tully Gym. Violators will be asked to leave the area. Failure to do so can result in forfeiture of the ball game, suspension of individuals and/or teams, and appropriate action by the University Judicial Office.
I. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY
1. Participation is limited to currently-enrolled, fee-paying FSU students, faculty members, and full-time staff. FAMU & TCC students and members of the community are not eligible. All areas of eligibility are covered in the Intramural By-Laws which are available through the Campus Recreation Office and online at the FSU Campus Recreation web site.
2. In order to participate in an Intramural contest each player must present their validated FSUCard. Exceptions must be directed to the Intramural Sports Office for consideration by the IM staff during regular business hours (9:00am-6:00pm). Bring a photo ID and proof of payment to obtain a waiver from the IM staff. No such waiver will be granted at the game/match site.
II. TEAM COMPOSITION & SCHEDULING
1. Each match-up consists of two 4-person teams. Teams may be comprised of a minimum of 2 players. Players must be present at the start of the heat. Teams which begin a heat with less than 4 players may NOT add players during the heat.
2. Team composition may change between heats.
3. The scheduling of teams shall be by random draw.
III. MATCH PLAY
1. Each heat shall consist of two 10-minute rounds.
2. Each round shall consist of four categories with five questions of increasing levels of difficulty in each category. Point values will increase with the difficulty level of the question. Point values will double in the second round.
3. A coin flip will determine which team selects the first category in round one. The team with the fewest points shall select first in round two. If tied, the team which did not select the first category in round one will select first in round two.
4. All questions will be toss-up questions in which any player may buzz-in to answer. The person who signals that he/she wants to answer the question must answer within 5 seconds of recognition by the scorekeeper without conferring with his/her teammates. Answers may either words or the letter of the answer, if choices are given.
6. The question will be stated by the moderator. Players may NOT buzz in until the moderator finishes reading the question.
7. Each contestant shall place his or her finger or hand on the buzzer at the start of the question. When a contestant wishes to answer a Toss-Up Question, they should depress the buzzer. The scorekeeper will indicate who signaled first. The decision of the scorekeeper shall be final. Contestants must wait until recognized by the scorekeeper to answer. If the improper contestant answers a question, that team shall be penalized the point value of the question and will lose its opportunity to answer the question.
8. Following an incorrect response, the opposing team will have an opportunity to buzz in. The team which buzzed in may not respond again to this question.
9. Following a correct response, the team member who answered correctly will select the next category and point value. The team member may consult with teammates on category selection for no more than 5 seconds.
10. If neither team answers the Toss-Up Question correctly, play will continue with the team who had the last correct response selecting another category / point value.
11. The moderator will judge the accuracy of the response to each question and tell the scorekeeper how to record it. The decision of the moderator shall be final.
12. A team may challenge a judge's decision, but the competition will not be delayed. All challenges will be examined by the game coordinator following the heat. The points for the question will be held in suspension and will be tallied by the coordinator by the end of the division heats.
13 .A contestant may complete his/her answer to the question asked immediately preceding the expiration of the 10-minute time period for a round.
14. The scorekeeper will record the running total points for each team on a board visible to all contestants.
IV. SCORING
1. Point values for each question vary and are displayed with the category on the screen. A correct response earns the team the assigned number of points. An incorrect response results in a deduction of the same assigned number of points. It is possible for a team to have a negative score at the end of the game.
V. SPORTSMANSHIP
1. The mission of Intramural Sports is to provide a recreational environment for the University community which is safe and enjoyable. While the game atmosphere is often competitive, ensuring participant safety, providing a fun, social atmosphere, and promoting sportsmanlike behavior among participants, spectators, and team followers are our primary concerns. The game atmosphere should remain good-natured at all times. Participants shall maintain good sportsmanship throughout their participation in all facets of the intramural program.
2. The Sportsmanship Rating System is intended to be an objective scale by which teams' attitude and behavior can be assessed throughout the intramural sports league and playoff seasons. Behavior before, during, and after an intramural sports contest is included in the rating. The team captain is responsible for educating and informing all players and spectators affiliated with his/her team about the system.
3. A team is responsible for the actions of the individual team members and spectators related to it. Additionally, FSU Intramural Sports does not recognize the use of coaches. Only the team captain shall speak to the officials regarding administrative matters (protests, ejections, disqualifications, etc). Furthermore, the team captain's efforts in assisting officials/staff to calm difficult situations and to restrain troubled teammates are key to controlling team conduct.
4. Sportsmanship is vital to the conduct of every Intramural contest. In order to encourage proper conduct during games, officials, administrative personnel, and supervisors shall make decisions on whether to warn, penalize or eject players or teams for poor sportsmanship. These decisions are final. The Intramural Sports administrative staff will rule on further penalties as a result of unsportsmanlike conduct.
5. Each participant should choose his or her team members carefully, as all team members will suffer the consequences of any disciplinary action taken by the Intramural Sports staff against that team for violation of the intramural rules and sportsmanship guidelines. Protests or appeals of sportsmanship ratings will not be recognized. The Intramural Sports administrative staff reserves the right to review any rating given to a team.
6. Additional information regarding team and participant sportsmanship including the rating method, factors, and scale is available in the Sportsmanship section of the Intramural Sports Handbook, available online at the FSU Campus Recreation web site.
