Revised for Fall 2003
Florida State University does not provide accident insurance coverage
for injuries received by Intramural participants. Each participant should
make sure that he/she has coverage either through family policies or the
student insurance plan. We cannot emphasize this point enough.
Florida State University PROHIBITS possession or consumption of
alcoholic beverages on University property. This includes the Intramural
Fields and Tully Gym. Violators will be asked to leave the area. Failure
to do so can result in forfeiture of the ball game, suspension of individuals
and/or teams, and appropriate action by the University Judicial Office.
Current National Federation (High School) Basketball Rules will
govern 3-on-3 play except for the following modifications.
I. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY
1. Participation is limited to currently-enrolled,
fee-paying FSU students, faculty members, and full-time staff. FAMU &
TCC students and members of the community are not eligible. All
areas of eligibility are covered in the Intramural By-Laws which are available
through the Campus Recreation Office and online at the FSU Campus Recreation
web site.
2. In order to participate in an Intramural contest each player must present
their validated FSUCard. Exceptions must be directed to the Intramural
Sports Office for consideration by the IM staff during regular business
hours (9:00am-6:00pm). Bring a photo ID and proof of payment to obtain
a waiver from the IM staff. No such waiver will be granted on the field.
II. TEAM COMPOSITION & PLAYER EQUIPMENT
1. Two teams of three players each, with a maximum of two substitutes
each, will play a halfcourt game. Teams must have two players at game
time to begin play. If two players are not available at game time, the
team forfeits.
2.
All players on a team should wear similar colored shirts or jerseys. Pinnies
are available at the court for each team.
3. Appropriate gym footwear must be worn. Running shoes or all-purpose
cleats are not appropriate for basketball.
4. No participants may wear caps or do-rags while playing.
5. Each team is responsible for supplying their own ball for warm-up.
Basketballs are available for check-out from the sign-in attendant in
Tully Gym. The game ball will be chosen from the warm-up balls. The court
monitor shall be the sole judge of the legality of the ball and shall
select the best ball available.
6. Jewelry, casts, or any items deemed dangerous by the official MAY NOT
BE WORN during the game. There are no courtesy warnings. Any player in
the game found to be wearing prohibited equipment (jewelry, etc) will
be assessed a personal foul and MUST remove him/herself from the game
(can be replaced by a substitute). He/she may reenter at the next substitution
opportunity. This foul will count towards the team's foul total; however,
the opposing team will NOT shoot any free throws. If the penalized team
is in possession of the ball, they will NOT lose possession. Play will
resume with a recheck. A player is subject to ejection for failure to
comply after an "equipment personal foul" has been assessed.
III. GAME TIME & SCORING
1. The game will consist of two 10-minute halves with a 3-minute halftime
intermission. The clock will run continuously for the entire game. All
games will begin simultaneously with the buzz of the scoreboard horn.
Game time kept on the large scoreboard for all games.
2. There are NO timeouts. In case of injury, time will be kept by the
court monitor for the affected game.
3. Winners need only win by one point. Teams that are tied at the end
of 20 minutes will play a 2-minute overtime period. All foul totals will
carry over. If the game is still tied at the end of the overtime period,
the winner will be determined by a shootout. The shootout will consist
of the three players from each team that are on the court shooting free
throws. A coin flip will decide the order that the teams shoot. Each player
will shoot one free throw. The team with the highest total made will be
the winner. If there remains a tie, a sudden-death shootout will occur.
4. All baskets made from inside the 3-point line will count as one point.
All baskets beyond the 3-point line will count for two points. All converted
foul shots will count as one point.
5. Each team will be required to take a shot at the basket within 15 seconds
after taking possession. The rule has been implemented to eliminate a
team from stalling to retain possession near the end of the game. Violations
of this rule, including non-legitiment shots, will results in an offensive
turnover and possession for the defending team.
IV. COURT MONITORS
1. There will
be one court monitor on every game. The monitor is present to oversee
the game and keep score and foul totals. Should a disagreement arise,
the decision will be settled by a coin toss.
2. Fighting will not be tolerated. Fighting and excessive arguing will
result in team dismissal. The court monitor or site supervisor may penalize
any player, substitute or coach for unsportsmanlike conduct by immediate
ejection and banishment from the playing area and gym.
V. GAME RULES
1. Possession to start a game/overtime will be determined by a coin toss.
2. Ball possession changes after a made basket unless a foul is awarded.
The imaginary "check line" is at the free throw line. To start
a game/overtime, after a score or when a foul is awarded, a player must
pass the ball in from this check line. On defensive rebounds or steals,
the ball need only be taken anywhere beyond the line.
3. The defense must take the ball behind the check line on any play in
which they gain possession. Whether or not the ball has been shot or has
touched the rim does not affect this rule. In the event that the defense
obtains possession and does not take the ball behind the check line AND
then attempts a shot, the shot and any related activity will be disregarded
and a turnover will result. The "new defense" is awarded the ball behind
the check line.
VI. FOULS
1. Teams will call their own fouls. All common, personal and technical
fouls shall be counted against a team total. In each half, a bonus will
be awarded on and after the 5th team foul. An individual player cannot
foul out of the game, but may be ejected for any cause by the court monitor
or an IM supervisor.
Common fouls (non-shooting) result in loss of possession for the offending
team.
Offensive fouls shall result in disallowing any converted basket and loss
of possession.
Shooting fouls with a missed basket shall result in retained possession
for the shooting team (recheck).
Shooting fouls with a converted basket shall result in the basket counted
and loss of possession (no penalty, play continues as if there was no
foul with the defense taking the ball).
During the final 2 minutes of the 2nd half and all overtime periods, all
non-offensive fouls result in one (1) free throw shot for the offended
team (even after a made basket).
2. Play will continue as normal following each free throw opportunity.
Players shall line up along the lane and prepare to rebound any missed
free throws. Off the rebound, the offensive team may shoot immediately
while the defensive team must take the ball behind the check line before
attempting a shot. Free throws that do not touch the rim will result in
a turnover with possession awarded to the opposing team (defense).
VII. SUBSTITUTIONS
1. Substitutions may be made after a basket, a foul or stoppage of play.
VIII. SPORTSMANSHIP
1. Sportsmanship is an important part of intramural sports. Teams receive
sportsmanship ratings at the conclusion of each game on a scale of 0 to
4 with 4 as an excellent rating. Teams must average a 3.0 during the regular
season to qualify for the playoffs.
2. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. Misconduct
of spectators and players may result in ejection and/or forfeiture of
the game. Spectators must remain in the out-of-play areas. Only players
are permitted in the playing area.
3. Any player who uses foul language, violently protests a call, or curses
an official or supervisor, will be removed from the game and will automatically
be suspended from his/her team's next game. In addition, he/she will have
to meet with the Director of Intramural Sports during office hours (Monday
through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) before he/she is eligible to participate
again. Any player who touches an official or supervisor will be placed
on suspension from all Intramural activities for a minimum period of one
calendar year from the time of the incident.
4. If at any time a team has 2 players or spectators ejected from the
game, the offending team will immediately forfeit the game.
5. FSU Intramural Sports does not recognize the use of coaches. Only the
team captain may speak to the umpires regarding administrative matters
(protests, ejections, disqualifications, etc.).
6. Teams shall assist in removing trash and equipment from their game
area at the conclusion of their game.
7. Umpires and supervisors are college students employed by FSU Campus
Recreation to provide a service to the participants of FSU Intramural
Sports. Officials are employed regardless of experience to fulfill a need
for a large number of officials to cover all the games being played. Officials
undergo clinics and evaluations to help them to constantly improve in
their abilities. Supervisors are trained to handle conflicts that occur
during games and are there to answer questions that participants may have
regarding Intramurals. The supervisors can be identified by the FSU IM
shirt or sweatshirt they will be wearing. FSU IM supervisors are veteran
officials or trained tournament personnel who have complete authority
to make decisions regarding problems or special situations. Supervisors
have been selected for their knowledge of intramural sports regulations
and rules, maturity, professionalism and a sincere interest in intramural
sports.
8. Additional information regarding sportsmanship may be obtained from
the Intramural Sports office or online at the FSU Campus Recreation web
site.
