GETTING INVOLVED IN INTRAMURAL SPORTS

Navigating our various procedures and timelines to get yourself or your team involved in Intramural Sports can be tricky. Here we lay out the fine print for our levels of competition, registration process, wait list procedure, league and tournament structure, captains responsibilities, playoff qualification.

Please review and adhere to the following guidelines for levels of competition, team & individual registration, wait lists, cancellation of team registration, team captain's requirements, and playoff structure.

Levels of Competition
A. Team Sports: Men's League
Division I: Where the talent is. D-I is for our advanced skill level teams. These leagues and tournaments are highly competitive. Teams advance to the All-Campus Championship Playoffs, meeting the Fraternity League champion in the All-Campus Championship final.
Division I-AA: Some talent, but not all stars make up the team rosters. D-I-AA is for our intermediate skill level teams with a range of very talented and moderately talented players. Leagues and tournaments remain very competitive. Teams advance to a separate playoff tournament.
Division II: Not exactly beginners, but for teams with a mix of a few skilled players and some scrubs. Teams are more interested in playing the game and perhaps winning a few than challenging for an all-campus title. Teams advance to a separate playoff tournament.
Division III: No scholarships, not much talent. The "Just for Fun" league for teams interested in having a good time and not interested (so much) in actually winning. Teams participate in a separate postseason event.
The IM Sports staff reserves the right to promote or demote teams among divisions as necessary to enhance the competitiveness of the division and/or the enjoyment of the other teams in the division.
B. Team Sports: Co-Rec League, Open League
Co-Rec leagues feature teams with a specific combination of male and female players as described in the rules for the sport.
Open league teams can use any combination of male and female players with no restriction on the minimum number of either gender required.
Division I: Designed for our talented, experienced teams. These leagues and tournaments are typically highly competitive. Teams advance to the All-Campus Championship playoffs.
Division II: Designed for our new teams and those who are more interested in playing the game, and perhaps winning a few, than challenging for the all-campus title. Teams advance to a separate playoff tournament.
C. Team Sports: Fraternity League, Sorority League, Women's League
Fraternity Garnet Division: For registered fraternities only. Qualification for Garnet Division play required as described in Section 6: Points Standings, Greek Organizations, Section I B. Teams advance to separate playoffs, meeting the Gold Division champion in the Fraternity League final, then meeting the Men's Division I champion in the All-Campus Championship final.
Fraternity Gold Division: For registered fraternities only. Qualification for Gold Division play required as described in Section 6: Points Standings, Greek Organizations, Section I B. Teams advance to separate playoffs, meeting the Garnet Division champion in the Fraternity League final, then meeting the Men's Division I champion in the All-Campus Championship final.
Sorority - For registered sororities only. Teams advance to separate playoffs, meeting the Women's League champion in the All-Campus Championship final.
Women’s (Independent) - For ladies, only; teams advance to the All-Campus Championship Playoffs, meeting the Sorority League champion in the All-Campus Championship final.
D. Individual/Dual Sports & Special Events
Advanced - These leagues and tournaments are highly competitive; teams advance to the All-Campus Championship Playoffs, meeting the Fraternity League champion in the All-Campus Championship Final.
Intermediate - These leagues and tournaments are slightly less competitive; teams advance to separate playoffs.
Beginner - These leagues and tournaments are designed for entry-level participants with little or no experience in the sport; teams advance to separate playoffs.

League & Event Registration
Intramural sports league and tournament registration information is released approximately two months prior to each semester. Such information is available to interested parties in the Intramural Sports Office and online at the FSU Campus Recreation web site. Registration periods are subject to change; participants are encouraged to check in the Intramural Sports Office or online at the FSU Campus Recreation web site for updates.
I. Registration Periods
Entries for all sports are accepted during the assigned registration periods on a space-available basis. Registrations after the assigned registration period ends (late registrations) may or may not be accepted and are not guaranteed placement into a league or tournament.
II. Team Entries
Registration for most team sports occurs online via the intramural sports web site beginning at 12 Noon on the first day of the registration period as noted on the intramural sports planner. The start time is subject to change and will be clearly noted on the intramural sports planner and online in association with the registration application. The end of the registration period is noted online in association with the registration application. Online registration requires the team captain to have an established login and password for the Secure Applications Menu of the fsu.edu web site (available free to all students, faculty, and staff). To enter, a team captain or team representative should select a game day and time for their team from the available game days and times as listed online. FSU Intramural Sports uses instant scheduling for its team sports in which a team will play one game per week on the day and at the time for which the team has registered throughout the regular season. To select a spot in a league, a team captain must supply a team name, captain's name, daytime phone number, and valid email address. Additionally, an alternate captain's name and contact information may be required. To hold the team's registered position in a league, a team captain (or team representative) must attend the sport's captains meeting (designated team sports only). The location, date, and time of the required captains meeting will be provided at the time of registration and is typically also listed on the intramural sports planner.
For those sports without online registration available, registration will occur in the Intramural Sports Office, 1035 Tully Gym, beginning at 12 Noon on the first day of the registration period as noted on the intramural sports planner.
All late registrations occur in the Intramural Sports Office, 1035 Tully Gym, beginning at the conclusion of the respective sport's captains meeting, or at the end of the assigned registration period for sports without a captains meeting.
III. Wait List
Once the allotted league space is full, teams may sign-up on a sport's waiting list. Waiting list teams will be placed into a league when teams are dropped due to failure to complete the captains requirements or when a team is dropped from competition following an unexcused regular season forfeit.
IV. Greek Organizations
Fraternity and sorority teams are not required to register for designated team sports, however team captains must attend the sport's captains meeting to hold their spot in the league. Teams select game times during the greek chairperson's meeting nearest to the start of the season. Selection order is determined by the team's overall finish in the sport during the previous year.
V. Individual Entries
Online registration is utilized for participants to enter individual/dual sports, certain special events, and select team sports as noted on the intramural sports planner. To enter, individuals should complete the online registration form with the information required. Information includes participant name, partner's name (when appropriate), team name (when appropriate), daytime phone number, email address, division, level of competition, and playing day and time preferences (when possible).
VI. Fee-Based Sports
For those sports in which a fee is required, registration will take place in the Intramural Sports Office, 1035 Tully Gym, beginning at 12 Noon on the first day of the registration period and ending at 5:00 pm on the last day of the registration period as noted on the intramural sports planner. Payment is required at the time of registration. Cash or check. Payee of check varies by sport; please contact the IM Sports Office for information.

Wait List
Teams are placed on a sport's wait list when their requested league, day, and/or time is full or if they wish to register for a sport after the registration period has ended.
I. Preregistered Wait List Team Captains Requirements
Wait list team captains who have properly registered during the sport's established registration period must complete the preseason captains requirements. The team captain (or a team representative) must also attend the wait list session of the respective sport's captains meeting (immediately follows the rules and policies session of the sport's captains meeting). A captain that fails to complete any of these requirements will have his/her team dropped from the wait list and must reregister during the late registration period for further consideration.
II. Late Registration Wait List Team Captains Requirements
Wait list team captains must complete the late registration captains requirements (complete the written or online quiz (if available)). A captain that fails to complete these requirements will cause his/her team to be ineligible to be placed into a league.
III. Wait List Priority Order
During the preregistration period, teams are ordered on the wait list based on the time at which they register. During the late registration period, teams are added on the wait list based on the time they complete all captains requirements. Wait list teams will be contacted regarding open positions in leagues based on this order.
IV. Team Sport Captains Meeting Placement Method
During the wait list session of the respective sport's captains meeting, wait list team captains present are provided with the opportunity to select from available openings in the league schedule. Following the wait list priority order, each wait list team's captain shall select an opening in which his/her team wishes to compete in the league. Wait list team captains (or a representative) must be present during this session to make a selection. Once all available openings are filled, wait list teams present at the meeting who did not select an opening will remain on the waiting list in the previously established order. Wait list teams that complete the other preseason captains requirements but fail to attend the wait list session will be dropped from the wait list and must reregister during the late registration period for further consideration.
V. Team Sport Post-Meeting Placement Method
Wait list teams not placed in a league during the captains meeting wait list session will be contacted to be placed into leagues as teams forfeit games/matches during the first 2 weeks of regular season play. Leagues will close at the end of the second week of regular season play. Wait list teams not contacted by this time will not be placed into a league. Players should attempt to join other teams already in the league.
VI. Individual/Dual Sports & Team Sports with Tournament Play
For individual sports and team sports with tournament play, wait list teams will be placed into the tournament bracket if a registered team drops out of the tournament prior to its first match or game. Wait list teams may also arrive at the game site and participate in the tournament in place of a team that does not show for its first match. In the event that multiple teams are waiting at the game site for an opening, the team ranked higher on the wait list will have priority. Once a team has participated in a tournament, they may not be replaced if they fail to show for a future contest.

Cancellation of Team Registration
A. How to Cancel a Team Registration
A team shall indicate its desire to cancel its registration for an intramural sport through written documentation submitted to the Intramural Sports Office in 1035 Tully Gym or via email from the Intramural Sports web site. No fees apply when a team cancels its registration by the assigned deadline.
B. Teams Preregistered in Time-Designated League
A team that signs up in a day and time designated league during the sport’s registration period shall have until the start time of the sport’s mandatory captains meeting to cancel its registration. Failure to attend the captains meeting (or take the captain’s quiz) results in automatic cancellation of a team’s registration. Attendance at a captains meeting represents confirmation for the registration. For sports without a captains meeting, a team must cancel its registration by 5:00 pm on the final day of the registration period to avoid penalty.
C. Teams Placed During a Sport's Wait List Session
A team that signs up on the wait list during the sport’s registration period and thereafter selects a playing day and time during the sport’s wait list session shall have until 12 Noon on the day following the wait list selection session (captains meeting) to cancel the selection/registration without penalty.
D. Teams Placed Following the Wait List Session
A team that is contacted and confirms placement into a league after the captains meeting and wait list session shall not have a grace period for cancellation once they have confirmed placement into a particular league.
E. Opting Out of Postseason Tournament Play
A team may opt out of participating in a sport's playoff tournament by indicating its intention to drop out of the league through written documentation submitted to the Intramural Sports Office in 1035 Tully Gym or via email from the Intramural Sports web site. The team must opt out by the designated start time of the sport's playoff draw meetings. For a sport without a playoff draw meeting, the team must opt out by prior to the start of the final scheduled week of regular season games. A team opting out of postseason play may still be assessed a forfeit fee for failure to participate in any remaining regular season contests. A team that properly drops out of the sport at the conclusion of the regular season shall not be subject to the cancellation fine.
F. Failure to Cancel Registration
A team that fails to cancel its registration as outlined in sections A through E shall be subject to the assessment of the late cancellation fine should it not participate as scheduled. 
G. Late Cancellation Fine
A registration cancellation fine of $20 is assessed to a team that cancels its registration following the established deadline for registration cancellation. The cancellation fine applies only to teams registered for non-fee based sports in which officials are assigned to officiate the contest or when 3 or more people comprise the standard number of players to participate for a team. The captain under which the team was originally registered, unless changed through written documentation, will be assessed the $20 cancellation fine. This fine will be assessed to the captain's university account via FSU Student Financial Services approximately 72 hours after the cancellation unless an appeal is filed. The fine is payable through the University Cashier's Office located in 1500 University Center A. Failure to pay the forfeit fine can result in a hold on a student's class registration or reception of a graduate's diploma until properly paid.
H. Late Cancellation Fine Appeal Process
The team captain must appeal the cancellation fine at the time he/she cancels the team registration. A written appeal is required and shall be submitted to the Director of Intramural Sports in 1035 Tully Gym or via email from the Intramural Sports web site. Evidence shall be provided at the request of the Director.

Captain's Requirements
Registered Teams
Each registered team must have a representative (captain) complete the preseason requirements for each sport in which they wish to participate in order for the team to be eligible to participate in the respective sport's league or tournament. Preseason requirements may be fulfilled in one of the following methods:
(1) The team captain (or representative, if captain is unavailable) shall attend the preseason captains meeting for designated sports. Meeting dates, times, and locations are available on the intramural sports planner and displayed among the information presented during the online registration process.
(2) The team captain shall complete the sport's online rules and principles quiz. This option becomes available to individuals who have personally attended a preseason captains meeting for a previous sport in the same academic year (beginning with the fall semester). The online quiz must be completed and a designated score attained by a specified day and time, noted with the online quiz instructions and traditionally at least 8 hours prior to the preseason captains meeting for the same sport.
Failure to Complete Requirements
Registered teams that fail to complete one of the above methods will be dropped from the league immediately upon nonattendance of the captains meeting. There are no excused absences for captains meetings. Teams which remain interested in participating must reregister by completing the late registration process. Teams competing in the fraternity, sorority, or independent points standings are subject to a point-penalty for failure to attend the captains meeting if and when their team is later placed into a league from the waiting list.
Late Registration Teams
Teams that register after the registration deadline shall complete the following requirements for their respective sport to be added to the league (or the waiting list) for the respective sport.
(1) Complete the late registration team captain quiz.
Late registration teams are ordered for placement into the league (or for addition to the wait list) based on the date and time that the entire registration and captain's requirement process is completed.

Chairperson's Responsibilities
Organizations or groups may designate an IM chairperson to represent the group in its interactions with the Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports administrative staff. In such instances, the department and program administrative staff will use the chairperson as the primary contact to communicate any policy, procedure, or bylaw concerns or violations, sportsmanship issues, and other official business. It is the responsibility of the chairperson to communicate such information in a timely manner to the organization's membership, team's participants, and associates. The team captain for an affected sport will then serve as a secondary contact.

Playoff Qualification
All teams qualify for the postseason playoffs regardless of record EXCEPT those teams that have an outstanding regular season forfeit OR have an average sportsmanship rating below 3.0.
I. Men's Independent League Teams
Men's independent league teams qualify for a particular level of playoffs based on their record at the time of the playoff draw meeting:
Teams that participated in Men's Division I during the regular season:
- All Men's D-I teams with at least 1 regular season victory qualify for the Division I / All-Campus Championship playoffs.
- Men's D-I teams with 0 regular season victories qualify for the Men's Division I-AA playoffs. Men's D-I teams with 0 regular season victories may elect to participate in the Division I / All-Campus Championship playoffs by notifying the IM staff during the playoff draw meeting for the sport.
Teams that participated in Men's Division I-AA during the regular season:
- All Men's D-I-AA teams with at least 1 regular season victory qualify for the Division I-AA playoffs.
- Men's D-I-AA teams with 0 regular season victories qualify for the Men's Division II playoffs. Men's D-I-AA teams with 0 regular season victories may elect to participate in the Division I-AA playoffs by notifying the IM staff during the Division I-AA playoff draw meeting for the sport.
- Men's D-I-AA teams with at least 1 regular season victory and 0 losses may elect to participate in the Division I playoffs by notifying the IM staff during the Division I playoff draw meeting for the sport.
Teams that participated in Men's Division II during the regular season:
- All Men's D-II teams with at least 1 regular season victory qualify for the Division II playoffs.
- Men's D-II teams with 0 regular season victories qualify for the Men's Division III playoffs. Men's D-II teams with 0 regular season victories may elect to participate in the Division II playoffs by notifying the IM staff during the playoff draw meeting for the sport.
- Men's D-II teams with at least 1 regular season victory and 0 losses may elect to participate in the Division I-AA playoffs by notifying the IM staff during the Division I-AA playoff draw meeting for the sport.
Teams that participated in Men's Division III during the regular season:
- All Men's D-III teams qualify for the Division III playoffs.
- Men's D-III teams with at least 1 regular season victory and 0 losses may elect to participate in the Division II playoffs by notifying the IM staff during the Division II playoff draw meeting for the sport.
- Each men's divisional playoff tournaments will be completed independently of each another. Winners from each tournament will NOT face each other for an overall title.
- The IM staff reserves the right to promote or demote teams, without consent, to another level of the playoffs as necessary to increase the competitiveness of a division and/or the enjoyment of the other teams in the division.

^ Team may elect to participate in the next higher level of the playoffs if they notify the IM staff during the respective playoff draw meeting. # Teams will automatically be placed in the next lower division for the playoffs unless they notify the IM staff during the respective playoff draw meeting to remain in their selected division. * Any team may be promoted or demoted by the IM Staff, without consent, to increase the competitiveness of a division and/or the enjoyment of the other teams in the division.

II. Co-Rec League and Open League Teams
Playoff qualification for Division I and Division II of these leagues will follow the procedure set forth for the Men's Division I and Men's Division II teams. Promotions and demotions will occur between these two divisions, with no Division I-AA or Division III playoff brackets.
III. Other Independent League Teams
Women's league teams will qualify for a single tournament bracket, respectively, unless the number of teams warrants a division of the tournament bracket. In the event of such a division, playoff qualification will follow the procedure set forth for Men's Division I and Division II teams with promotions and demotions occurring between these two divisions.
IV. Greek Organizations
Fraternity and sorority teams are seeded for the playoffs based on their regular season records. A comprehensive overview of the greek points system and playoff qualification is available in the Greek Annual Championship Standings section of the Intramural Sports web site.
V. Playoff Draw Meetings
Men's independent, women's, and co-rec teams select their playoff game dates and times at a playoff draw meeting conducted typically during the fourth week of the regular season. The team captain or a team representative will have the opportunity to survey the entire playoff bracket with predetermined game dates and times for all rounds of play. Representatives will select their playoff position accordingly. Selection order is determined by sportsmanship rating, then regular season record. Teams not in attendance at the playoff draw meeting will be placed into the bracket at random. Once the bracket is set, no reschedules are permitted during the playoffs except in the event of inclement weather or conflicts created by the Intramural Sports Office.

Points Standings
Fraternities, sororities, and independent teams accumulate points based on their finishes in sports leagues and tournaments throughout the fall and spring semesters towards the Annual Team Championship Trophies. Registration information for the annual team titles, the point scale for each sport or event, and any penalities for forfeits or other rule violations are available in the Intramural Sports Office and online in the Annual Championship Standings section of the Intramural Sports web site.
