Rounding of Points
When tied teams split points, the points awarded to the tied teams are rounded to the nearest 0.5 point, when needed. For example, a tie for 3rd in a 150-point sport results in 124 points for each team (128 for 3rd + 120 for 4th / 2 teams). A tie for 3rd in a 75-point sport results in 41 points for each team (42.5 for 3rd + 40 for 4th = 82.5 / 2 = 41.25 rounded to 41). In the event that two teams are separated by less than 3 points in the final overall standings, these team's totals for affected sports may be rescored to remove the rounding factor.

Why round? Well, the margin of victory in the points race is typically at least 10 points (45.5 points in 01-02, 80.5 in 00-01, and 62.5 in 99-00). So, 0.25 points here or there is not expected to have a big impact on the standings.

For example, when 3 teams tie for 7th in a 50-point sport, the scoring is 32.5 (7th) + 30 (8th) + 28 (9th) = 90.5. Split 3 ways that's 30.17 points per team. To simplify the points standings, 30.17 is rounded down to 30 points per team.

Welcome to the 2002-03 points race... where 1st and 2nd are TIED. 4th and 5th are split by just a 1/2 point as are 7th and 8th. Time to break out our calculator and refigure some points to include those .17s and .25s that were rounded out earlier in the year.

Below is the breakdown of points for the spring and fall. The affected sports where rounding was taken out are bolded. And now, by just 0.25 points, we have a winner.
