November 14, 2004 PENSACOLA -- Holy Rolls, FSU's reigning men's all-campus flag football champions, brought home the 2nd place trophy from the 25th annual University of West Florida Regional Flag Football Championships in Pensacola last weekend. With the runner-up finish, Holy Rolls received an automatic bid to the 2004 ACIC Nike Flag Football National Championships in New Orleans this December. Holy Rolls ended pool play undefeated, downing powerhouse Southern University of Baton Rouge 13-7 and Alabama A&M 27-0. In tournament action, Holy Rolls outlasted the University of South Alabama 40-27 in the quarterfinals, then downed Troy University 19-13 in the semifinals. Perennial power and local favorite Pensacola Junior College defeated Holy Rolls in the championship game. Holy Rolls' Chris Roth and Dusten Cote were each named to the All-Tournament Team. As a team, Holy Rolls' second place finish is the best-ever by a FSU team in the UWF regional.
Referee Scott Moriak, a student official with FSU Intramural Sports, was also recognized as one of the top officials working the tournament. He was among nearly 40 officials from over a dozen schools who traveled to Pensacola for the 2-day event. The University of West Florida Regional Flag Football Championships, now in its 25th year of competition, consisted of over 40 flag football teams from throughout the Southeast. |
