Campus Recreation Hosts Town Hall Meeting on New Intramural Sports Complex
January 9, 2006

TALLAHASSEE – Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports will host a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, January 18th at 5:00 pm in Moore Auditorium in the Oglesby Union to unveil the site design for its new 104-acre Intramural Sports Outdoor Complex. The 30-minute session will include a presentation from Intramural Sports staff along with representatives from the project's design team and a question-and-answer period. Students and other members of the FSU community are invited to attend.

The 104-acre plot located on the Southwest Campus near Seminole Golf Course is over eight times larger than the current 12-acre Intramural Sports Complex on St. Augustine Street. In the first phase of the project, forty-five acres will be developed into playable space to include flag football, soccer, softball, and sport club fields, along with picnic pavilions, festival space, changing facilities, and a walking trail. Outdoor basketball, beach volleyball, and tennis courts and a street hockey rink are planned for the second phase. Once completed, the facility will nearly quadruple the amount of outdoor recreational space on campus.

In 2003 and 2004, Campus Recreation collaborated with FSU Facility Planning to formalize its proposal to secure funding from the student-fee based Capital Improvement Trust Fund. In the summer of 2004, the project was awarded $8.8 million for its first phase. During the past year, a planning committee of FSU students, faculty, and staff has met to analyze the needs of students and prioritize items in the project.

The project moved through the preliminary design phase last summer. The firm of Barnett Fronczak Architects was selected to lead the design team last fall. Since November, Campus Recreation representatives have met monthly with the design team to develop the site plan to be presented at the Town Hall Meeting on January 18th. Groundbreaking for the new facility is slated for later this spring. Campus Recreation anticipates the new Intramural Sports Outdoor Complex will be open to students in late 2007.

Campus Recreation to Construct New Multi-Million Dollar Outdoor Sports Complex
Thursday, April 21, 2005

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State University Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports are proud to announce the planned construction of a multi-million dollar outdoor sports facility that will nearly quadruple the amount of outdoor recreational space on campus.

The facility will be located on a 104-acre plot of land on the Southwest Campus near the Seminole Golf Course. At 104 acres, the facility will be nearly one-fourth the size of the main campus and over eight times larger than the current 12-acre Intramural Sports Complex on St. Augustine Street.

Campus Recreation envisions developing 45 of the 104 acres into playable field space to include five independent softball fields, twelve flag football fields, and four sport club fields. The vision also includes beach volleyball courts, an outdoor basketball and street hockey facility, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, and a walking trail. The remaining acreage will be dedicated to parking, support buildings, and landscaping. The cost of constructing the entire facility is estimated at nearly $17 million.

This spring, a planning committee of FSU students, faculty, and staff has met to analyze the needs of students and prioritize items in the project. $8.8 million has been committed to the project from the student fee-based Capital Improvement Trust Fund (CITF) for phase one. Among the priorities for the initial phase are softball fields and multipurpose football and soccer fields in order to accommodate the growing number of intramural participants.

Intramural Sports has seen a 27-percent increase in the number of participants and game spectators at intramural contests since 2001-02. In 2003-04, students took advantage of Intramural Sports offerings on over 125,000 occasions. This year, Intramural Sports accommodated a record 248 flag football teams, 170 kickball squads, 204 soccer teams, and 216 softball squads in games and matches at the current IM Sports Complex. Still, nearly 40 teams in each sport remained on the waiting list due to current space limitations.

With the new facility, Intramural Sports expects to expand its programs to include more teams in sports such as flag football, soccer, softball, and kickball while also allowing for longer or multiple seasons for its more popular activities. Additional space will also be available for open recreation such as pick-up games and team practices.

The project will move through the design phase this summer and fall with construction to begin in 2006. Campus Recreation anticipates the facility will be open to students in late 2006 or early 2007.
