ANNUAL POINTS STANDINGS DETAILS
INDEPENDENT TEAMS
Section I: Availability
Annual championship points standings are computed for independent teams competing in the men's and co-rec leagues. The points standings from these leagues are independent of one another.

Section II: Team Registration
Teams may enter the Annual Championship Standings by registering their team online at the Intramural Sports web site between the start of the fall semester and January 31st of the following spring semester. Once registered, team points will be calculated for all sports completed under the registered team name only. Following registration in the Annual Championship Standings race, if a team wishes to change names, the IM Sports staff must be notified prior to the playoff meeting for the respective sport. For minor sports (individual and dual sports such as racquetball tournaments), team members must sign up as a individual and include their team's name on the registration form. Teams may NOT claim individuals for their team once a tournament or event has begun.

Section III. Qualifying Sports and Events
A. Men's Major Sports
A men's team's top 6 scores from 8 major sports throughout the academic year (fall and spring semesters) -- flag football, volleyball, team tennis, kickball, soccer, basketball, softball, dodgeball -- are included in the points standings. Major sports bonus points are awarded on the 100-point scale.
B. Men's Minor Sports
A men's team's top 3 scores from select non-major sports and events during the fall semester and top 3 scores from such sports and events during the spring semester are included in the points standings. Minor sports bonus points are awarded on the 50-point scale.
Fall Minor Sports (Best 2) Spring Minor Sports (Best 3)

C. Co-Rec Sports
A co-rec team's top 7 scores from 9 sports throughout the academic year (fall and spring semesters) -- flag football, volleyball, co-rec basketball, kickball, soccer, bowling, softball, wallyball, dodgeball -- are included in the points standings. All sports bonus points are awarded on the 100-point scale. To qualify for sports points in sports where a co-rec league is not available, the co-rec team must register a squad in the women's league or have at least one member of each gender participate in all contests for an open league team.
D. Women's Sports
A women's team's top 6 scores from 8 major sports throughout the academic year (fall and spring semesters) -- flag football, volleyball, team tennis, kickball, soccer, basketball, softball, dodgeball -- are included in the points standings. All sports bonus points are awarded on the 100-point scale.
E. Excluded Sports
Due to limited registration, special preseason and weekend tournaments are not included in the points standings. Other IM sports not listed above will not qualify for Annual Championship Standings points.

Section IV. Points Breakdown
A. Team Sports Participation Points
Men's, women's, and co-rec teams receive 20 points for their participation in each team sport. Team sports include those sports which require 3 or more participants to field a regulation squad for the sport. Participation points are awarded only once per team sport regardless of the number of teams registered under a team's name.
B. Individual/Dual Sports & Special Event Participation Points
Men's teams receive 5 points per participant in each non-team minor sport. Such sports include, but are not limited to, racquet sports tournaments (singles receives 5 points per player, doubles receives 10 points per doubles squad), tailgate games, the bench press competition, and other special events such as the swim meet. Teams may receive up to 20 participation points in each non-team sport.
C. Bonus Points
Teams score points based on their finish in tournament play.
Major Sports Place Minor Sports
100 points Champion 50 points
85 points Runner-up 40 points
75 points Final 4 35 points
65 points Elite 8 30 points
55 points Sweet 16 25 points
50 points Round of 32 20 points
40 points 33 and Higher 20 points
D. Division I League Bonus
Men's and co-rec teams completing participation in Division I for team sports with such designation available will receive a bonus of 20 points added to their score for that sport. Teams starting the regular season in Division I but demoted to Division I-AA or Division II for the playoffs will receive team points based on their finish in that division's playoffs and will not receive the Division I Bonus. Also, teams will not receive the Division I Bonus if the Division I qualifying sport is not among the scoring sports for that team.
E. Division II Level Playoff Teams
When only Divisions I and II are available for a sport, there will be no deduction for teams participating or dropped to Division II for the playoffs. Division I teams still receive the 20 point bonus in this format.
When Division I-AA is available for a particular sport, the following deductions will apply to Division II teams: Division I-AA teams who are demoted to the Division II playoffs will receive team points based on their finish in the Division II playoffs MINUS 20 points for participation in the lower division playoff bracket.  For example, the Division II playoff champion will receive 80 points, 2nd place 65 points, Final 4 55 points, and Elite 8 45 points.  However, teams may never receive less than 40 bonus points in a team sport.  Therefore, Sweet 16 and below in the Division II playoffs will all receive 40 points.  Teams will not be deducted the 20 points for Division II playoff participation if the qualifying sport is not among the scoring sports for that team.
F. Division III Level Teams
All Division III teams will receive 40 bonus points for the sport. No additional points based on the team's finish in a Division III playoff tournament will be awarded. Division III teams promoted to Division II for the playoffs will qualify for the Division II points structure.
G. Forfeits
Teams which forfeit a team sport playoff game for any reason (failure to play, use of ineligible players, etc) will receive NO bonus points for that sport.
H. Defaults
Teams will be permitted one default per sport. Defaults are recorded when a team contacts the IM Sports Office by 12 Noon on the day of the contest to report that they will be unable to attend. A default is also recorded when a team appears for a contest with one less than the required number participants (2 or more less than required number constitutes a forfeit). The second default for a team in the same sport will result in a forfeit.

Section V. Tournaments
A. Advanced & Beginner Tournaments
Team representatives must compete in the advanced bracket of individual & dual sports to receive maximum bonus points based on their finish for such sport. Participants in the intermediate or beginner bracket will garner bonus points based on their finish MINUS 10 points for participation in the lower division (never less than 20 points for the sport). When three levels of competition are available, participants in the lowest skill level will receive no bonus points for their final rank.
B. Combined Team Events
For events in which independent teams compete with fraternities and/or sororities (swimming, wrestling, track, etc) and a minimum number of participants is required for a team score, points will be based on the ranking of only the independent teams competing in the event/tournament. Points will be awarded based on the final team place. For such events/tournaments, 3rd place receives "Final 4" points (see table above), 4th place garners "Elite 8" points, 5th gets "Sweet 16" points, and 6th receives "Round of 32" points. Places 7 and higher will each receive "33 and Higher" bonus points only.
C. Combined Team Tournaments
For tournaments in which registered independent teams compete in a bracket with both fraternity and independent participants, points will be awarded based on the round in which they are eliminated regardless of weather a fraternity team or an independent team eliminates them and regardless of their standing versus other independent teams. For example, if an independent team is eliminated in the Final 4, the team will score only Final 4 points, even if their finish is the best among the independent teams (fraternity team wins tournament).
D. Combined Individual Events
For events in which individuals from independent teams compete with fraternity and/or sorority members (mini golf, go-cart time trials), points will be based on the ranking of only the independent participants competing in the event. Points will be awarded based on the final individual ranking. For such events, 3rd and 4th places receive "Final 4" points (see table above), places 5-8 garner "Elite 8" points, and places 9-16 get "Sweet 16" points.
E. Combined Individual/Dual Tournaments
For tournaments in which registered independent team members compete as individuals or pairs in a bracket with both fraternity and independent participants, points will be awarded based on the round in which they are eliminated regardless of whether a fraternity member or an independent team member eliminates them and regardless of their standing versus other independent team participants. For example, if an independent team member is eliminated in the Final 4, the team will score only Final 4 points, even if their finish is the best among the independent participants (fraternity team members win tournament, etc).
F. Consolation Format Tournaments
For tournaments structured in the consolation format, teams will be ranked according to their final record of wins and losses during the tournament play. Therefore, in order to receive maximum bonus points, a team must complete the tournament undefeated.

GREEK ORGANIZATIONS
Section I: Availability
A. Eligible Teams
Annual championship points standings are computed for greek teams competing in the fraternity garnet, fraternity gold, and sorority leagues. The points standings from these leagues are independent of one another. Organization eligibility for the greek leagues is restricted to organizations properly registered through the FSU Office of Greek Life and FSU Student Activities Office.
B. Fraternity Divisions
Fraternity teams are divided into two divisions -- garnet and gold -- based on prior participation in Intramural Sports. At the conclusion of each academic year, the lowest scoring eligible fraternity in the garnet division is demoted to the gold division. The gold division champion is then promoted to the garnet division for the next year's events. In the event that a garnet division fraternity becomes ineligible for participation in intramurals, the next highest scoring team from the gold division will be promoted to the garnet division. Modifications to the fraternity divisional structure are made only at the conclusion of the academic year unless unusual circumstances dictate otherwise.

Section II: Team Registration
Teams are automatically entered when they participate in their first team sport of the year. Teams must register and participate under their organization's name to score annual championship standings points for each particular scoring sport.

Section III. Qualifying Sports and Events
A. Fraternity Sports
The Intramural Sports Office, with the input of individual fraternity intramural chairpersons and other related groups, designates the specific sports and events to be included in annual championship standings race during the academic year (fall and spring semesters). The sports designated for the year are officially announced at the second intramural chairpersons meeting of the fall semester, typically the third Monday of classes.
B. Sorority Sports
The Intramural Sports Office, with the input of individual sorority intramural chairpersons and other related groups, designates the specific sports and events to be included in annual championship standings race during the academic year (fall and spring semesters). The sports designated are officially announced at the second intramural chairpersons meeting of the fall semester, typically the third Monday of classes.
C. Package Sports
Specific sports and events may be grouped to provide organizations with the opportunity to drop a poor sport score from their overall total. For example, three sports of like point-value may be grouped with only the top two scores out of the three sports being included in the organization's annual championship standings point total; the lowest score being dropped.

Section IV. Points Breakdown
A. Assignment of Sport Point Value
The Intramural Sports Office assigns specific point values to each designated sport at the beginning of each academic year. The value of each sport is released with the designation of scoring sports at the second intramural chairpersons meeting of the fall semester. Points are awarded based on each participating team's final ranking in each sport according to one of the following point scales.

B. Awarding of Points in Team Sports
Points are awarded in team sports following the completion of the postseason tournament. Playoff teams are ranked according to their finish in the postseason tournament. Teams that do not qualify for the playoffs are ranked based on their regular season record. Ties are broken for playoff qualification only and not for the awarding of points. For example, all four teams losing in the quarterfinals receive the same number of points (split 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th) regardless of any regular season results. Please link to our Greek Team Sport Scoring Example for a 2-league, 12-team example.
C. Awarding of Points in Team Sports Which Allow Multiple Teams from the Same Organization
Points are awarded to all teams competing in the designated scoring league or bracket in accordance with the point scale listed above. In the non-scoring league or bracket, the organization with the championship-winning team will receive points equivalent to 20% of the champion's points according to designated point scale for that sport. For example, the organization that wins the Fraternity B league/tournament in a 50-point sport would receive 10 points. No other teams in the B league/tournament score points for their organization.
D. Awarding of Points in Individual/Dual Sports Tournaments
Points are awarded in individual/dual sports at the completion of the sport's tournament. Teams are ranked based on the round the team's best player is eliminated. For cases in which teams are ranked based on the best finish of two or more players, teams are ranked based the average of these player's finishes. When two or more teams are tied, the team with the individual who advanced furthest in the tournament will be awarded the higher place. Tiebreaking exceptions for teams with an individual forfeiting or defaulting a match are shown on the Greek Individual/Dual Sport Scoring Example, a 16-player tournament example.
E. Awarding of Points in Combined Tournaments
For tournaments in which fraternity or sorority teams or players compete in a bracket with both greek and independent participants, points will be awarded based on the round in which they are eliminated regardless of whether a greek team/player or an independent team/player eliminates them and regardless of their standing versus other greek teams/players. For example, if an greek team/player is eliminated in the semifinals, the team/player will be recognized only as a Final 4 participant for the awarding points, even if their finish is the best among the greek teams/players (independent wins tournament).
F. Awarding of Points in Combined Special Events
For special events in which registered independent teams compete alongside greek teams but are scored independent of one another, greek teams will be ranked separately (by division) prior to the awarding of annual championship team standings points.
G. Awarding of Points in the Swim Meet
For the swim meet (and other events in which independent team members compete with members of fraternities and/or sororities and earn points in individual races), greek participants will earn points in individual races/events alongside independent participants. Additionally, each greek organization will receive 1 point towards the meet standings are each different swimmer that represents the team (a swimmer competing in 2 events, scores only 1 participation point for the team overall). Thus, participants do not need to reach the final for a particular race/event in order to score points for their organization. Greek organizations will be ranked based on the accumulation of points throughout all meet events. Team standings points will be based on the ranking of only the fraternity/sorority teams competing in the meet.
H. Consolation Format Tournaments
For tournaments structured in the consolation format, teams will be ranked according to their final record of wins and losses during the tournament play. Therefore, in order to receive maximum bonus points, a team must complete the tournament undefeated.

Section V. Playoff Qualification and Seeding
A. Qualification
All teams without an outstanding forfeit advance to playoffs and will be seeded based on their regular season results.
B. Teams with Regular Season Defaults or Forfeits
For playoff seeding, teams with a default (losing by default) that are tied with other teams fall out of a tie with those teams to the next lower place.
Similarly, teams with a forfeit that are tied with other teams fall out of a tie with those teams to the next lower place. When a team with a forfeit is tied with a team with a default, the team with a forfeit will fall out of a tie with that team to the next lower place.
C. Tiebreaker
Ties for playoff positions are broken according to the following structure:
1. Best won-loss record of games among the tied teams.
2. Fewest points given up in games against the tied teams.
3. Most points scored in games against the tied teams.
4. Best won-loss record of games against common opponents.
5. Fewest points given up in games against common opponents.
6. Most points scored in games against common opponents.
7. Fewest points given up in all games.
8. Most points scored in all games.
9. Best won-loss record against each team, beginning with the first place team and moving successively lower in the standings.
10. Coin toss.
When 3 or more teams are tied and a single tiebreaker can determine the seeding of all teams, it will be implemented to determine all seeds. However when 3 or more teams are tied and a tiebreaker eliminates one of the teams from the tie but leaves 2 or more still tied, the order for the remaining tied teams will be determined by restarting the tiebreaker procedure with tiebreaker 1 for those teams. See the Greek Team Sport Scoring Example for details.

For points scored or points given up tiebreakers, teams winning by default or forfeit will have their points totals multiplied by the appropriate coefficient to adjust their point totals to reflect a point total based on a equivalent number of games played among the other tied teams.

Section VI. Penalties
A. Forfeit Penalty Assessment
Teams will be subject to a point standings penalty for EACH forfeit by their team or a representative of their team (individual/dual sports & special events). Note: Organizations can receive negative points for an event with an excessive number of forfeits.
B. Forfeit Penalty Points
Forfeit penalties are assessed at the rate of 20% of the total points possible for the affected sport. Each forfeit is assessed the penalty. Therefore, a team with two forfeits in a 50-point sport will be assessed 20 penalty points in that sport. Failure to attend captains meetings is assessed at same rate, if the team is later placed into league.
50-point sports: 10-point penalty (per forfeit).
75-point sports: 15-point penalty.
100-point sports: 20-point penalty.
150-point sports: 30-point penalty.
C. Team Sport Penalty Points
Teams which forfeit a team sport tournament or playoff game for any reason (failure to play, use of ineligible players, etc) will receive NO points for that sport. For required sports, the additional forfeit point penalty will not apply. For package sports, the additional forfeit point penalty will be assessed and will be retained in the standings regardless of whether the sport in which the forfeit occurs is one of the scoring sports for that team. For package sports, the failure to attend the captains meeting penalty is linked to the scoring sport and will not be retained in the standings if the sport is not one of the scoring sports for the organization.
D. Defaults
Teams will be permitted one default per sport. Defaults are recorded when a team contacts the IM Office by 12 Noon on the day of the contest (12 Noon Friday for Sunday games) to report that they will be unable to attend. A default is also recorded when a team appears for a contest with one less than the required number participants (2 or more less than required number constitutes a forfeit). The second default for a team in the same sport will result in a forfeit.
E. Failure to Attend Required Sport Captains Meeting
Teams whose captain misses a sport's captains meeting and are later placed into a league will be assessed a point penalty for the organization in that sport. Teams which miss the captains meeting and are not placed into a league will not be subject to the penalty.
F. Teams with a Default or Forfeit in an Individual/Dual Sport or Special Event
In final awarding of points for the sport or event, teams with a default (losing by default) that are tied with other teams fall out of a tie with those teams to the next lower place. In final awarding of points for the sport or event, teams with a forfeit that are tied with other teams fall out of a tie with those teams to the next lower place. When a team with a forfeit is tied with a team with a default, the team with a forfeit will fall out of a tie with that team to the next lower place.
G. Required Number of Participants in Individual/Dual Sports Tournaments and Special Events
Players must participate in at least one match to count towards a team's required number of participants for a sport. Thus, teams that have less than the required number of players participating will drop below all other teams with the required number of players participating in the final ranking regardless of their finish.
H. Penalty Retention
Forfeit penalties will be retained in the standings regardless of whether the sport in which the forfeit occurs is one of the scoring sports for that team.

OTHER POLICIES
Section I. Rounding of Points
When tied teams split points, the points awarded to the tied teams are rounded to the nearest 0.5 point, when needed. For example, a tie for 3rd in a 150-point sport results in 124 points for each team (128 for 3rd + 120 for 4th / 2 teams). A tie for 3rd in a 75-point sport results in 41.5 points for each team (42.5 for 3rd + 40 for 4th = 82.5 / 2 = 41.25 rounded to 41.5). In the event that two teams are separated by less than 3 points in the final overall standings, these team's totals for affected sports may be rescored to remove the rounding factor.

Section II. Standings Protests
Teams who wish to protest the awarding of points for the annual championship should direct their concerns to the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports who will review the protest.
