Dirks. |
Paul Dirks
Director of Campus Recreation 1971-2003.
Paul ended his reign as Director of Campus Recreation in the spring
of 2003. Paul Dirks was hired as the FSU Men’s Intramural Coordinator
in 1971, and by 1973 Intramurals became coed and he was named Director
of Intramurals. Paul worked closely with Student Government throughout
the 1970s and the 1980s to secure adequate recreational facilities
for FSU students. His efforts resulted in the funding and construction
of the award winning Dr. Bobby E. Leach Student Recreation Center
in 1989. After the Leach Center opened to packed crowds in 1991,
Paul continued to work for expanded recreational facilities and
opportunities for students and his work resulted in two major expansions
of the Leach Center and the building of the current Intramural Field
Complex. Paul has been a member of a number of professional organizations
and associations, a lifelong member of the National Intramural and
Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), a certified referee and
sports official in multiple sports, and an avid recreational sports
enthusiast. He has played racquetball and tennis with faculty and
students, refereed more intramural games in every sport than most
people can count and led student and community groups on canoe and
ski trips. As a hands-on administrator, Paul has lived his career
and invited everyone to come and enjoy the benefits of an active
lifestyle with him. Don’t look for Paul Dirks to slow down in retirement,
he’ll be too busy organizing and officiating tournaments, working
out, attending spinning classes, and continuing to show us all the
secret to staying young.
