| RECREATIONAL SCUBA TRAINING |
Learn from the agency with the highest academic and skill standards in the U.S., meet other future divers, and have fun! The course meets Mondays 6:00-8:00 PM for lecture and Wednesdays 6:00-8:00 PM in the pool for 8 weeks. All classes meet at the Leach Center. And, we will also do a weekend dive in a local spring as well as a dive trip in the Gulf of Mexico. There will be an optional three-day trip to the Florida Keys where students can achieve advanced certification.
Class Fee
The cost of the course is $300 for FSU students and $350 for FSU faculty and staff. This cost includes:
All scuba equipment for the duration of the course, SEI Diving Course Packet (workbooks, dive tables, log book, carrying case), and dive fees for state parks.
The basic course fee is due the first night of class.
Additional Requirements
Students are responsible for:
- Mask, fins, snorkel, and dive booties that A) fit and B) are appropriate for scuba diving.

Skin diving equipment can be purchased at one of the two local dive shops, Coral Reef Scuba (Capital Circle NE) and Blue Water Sports (Apalachee Parkway). Don’t buy gear until you have been to the first class. The text can either be purchased through the instructor, at local bookstores, or online.
Age and Skill Requirements
Ages for Open Water Diver certification at FSU are 18 and over.
The class has an entry-level swimming evaluation (200 yards, any stroke), 25 feet underwater on one breath, and 10 minute tread water. There is also a medical evaluation form that is required to enter the course.
