| COURSE DESCRIPTIONS & SPRING 2007 SCHEDULE |
The Aquatics Department offers students, faculty and staff, and the community the opportunity to enroll in certification classes. The classes are held at the aquatic facilities across campus. All classes are taught by certified American Red Cross instructors. Classes include Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Instructor Training, and Water Safety Instruction. Lifeguard Training
The American Red Cross lifeguard training program provides 30 hours of professional lifeguard training with CPR and first aid skills. Prerequisites include being 15 years old, swimming 300 yards continuously, recovering a 10-pound brick from a depth of 12 feet and swimming 20 yards with the brick using both hands and keeping your face above water (this skill must be completed in 100 seconds).

CPR for the Professional Rescuer
This class is designed to teach professional rescuers (those with a duty to respond) the skills needed to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies. The course will include Preventing Disease Transmission, Conscious Choking Adult, Child and Infant, Unconscious Choking Adult, Child and Infant, Adult CPR (1 & 2 person), Child CPR (1 & 2 person), Infant CPR (1 & 2 person), Rescue Breathing for Adult, Child and Infant, Using a Pocket Mask and Bag Valve Mask.

Adult CPR / First Aid / AED
The purpose of this 7-hour course is to give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adult victims of sudden cardiac arrest, until EMS arrive. Must pass a written exam (35 questions) with a 80% or better and pass the skills evaluation.

First Aid
The purpose of this 4 hour course is to give individuals the knowledge and skills to recognize and provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses.

Lifeguard Instructor Training
This 27-hour class is designed to train participants in the skills needed to instruct a lifeguard training class. Prerequisites include being 17 years of age, and the successful completion of a pretest, practice teaching assignments, and final written examination.

Water Safety Instructor Training
This 30-hour instructor course is designed to train individuals to teach American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety courses. Prerequisites include a minimum age of 17 and successful completion of pretests.

Download and print out our registration / consent form (Adobe Acrobat required) and mail it to us (FSU Campus Recreation / Aquatics, 210 Leach Center, Tallahassee, FL 32306) or stop by FSU Aquatics Director's Office located on the Pool Deck at the Leach Center weekdays between 5 pm and 10 pm. Sorry, no phone registration is available. Make checks/money orders payable to FSU.
